Bike Beauties | Reel Gals

  

This motley band of cyclists are the gals behind the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival. They bust buns year round to showcase the raddest in contemporary Asian cinema & video art.

 

Speedster Sonia, the fest’s fearless Executive Director, leads this megawatt team. Her Globe Carmel, with handy dandy step-through frame, keeps her skirt in one piece while she rips through the Annex labyrinth.

  

What’s a film festival without films? Reel Asian’s Artistic Director, Highway Heather, knows how to pick ‘em. Same goes for her sweet ride. She scored her pre-stickered Le Tour for $10 in Streetsville, Mississauga (and 2 other free bikes!) from an enthusiast with excess bike baggage. But her love for it goes beyond just its slick tires, sumptuous handle-bar position and cushy seat for long rides around the West Toronto Railpath & High Park. She showed up to the photo shoot only after buffing it to a heavenly shine. (Perhaps while wearing them white kitten heels, too)

 

This Director of Marketing, Loco Louanne, sports some crazy colour theory when she straddles her sturdy Norco, which accommodates nifty front & back-end baskets. Gold bike helmet, fuschia flats, flowery sleeveless and minty short-shorts seem like perfect attire for cruising the Don River Trail or Lake Shore Blvd to Ashbridges Bay. However, she exhibited considerably less wit when she once biked from Downtown to North York armed only with a hand-drawn, nononsensical map with no street names. That story ended with her awaiting rescue 2 hrs later in some random forest. Crazily enough, no polar bears mauled her.

 

Joyride Joyce, Director of Communications extraordinaire, claims to enjoy quaint bikerly jaunts across Cosburn Ave. Hmmm. We can’t help but suspect her of other nefarious pleasures. No kidding here, this girl didn’t even arrive on her own bike. It was copped off a friend 10 mins prior to the photo shoot. And that helmet? Yup, she borrowed it from a stranger with a kind heart who was noshing nearby, al fresco. Oh. Joy. Ride. Joyce.
